Sex, Drugs & Alcohol: How BP Secured an Oil Deal in Azerbaijan

11/2/2010, 2:41 PM

As reported late last week, BP signed a 30-year deal with Azerbaijan on Thursday to explore and develop major Caspian Sea gas fields. On its own, the story is a little bit dull to those outside of the petrochemical industry and financial world, but once the light is shined on this seedy backstory, we begin to see a tale of corruption and misdeeds. BP has been counting on the short memory of the public to forget how this deal began years ago and the real story here is the culmination of a long, dark road filled with BP’s unique brand of debauchery and decadence. But after the Gulf Coast oil spill, our memories are not so temporal.

In 2007, a reporter by the name of Glen Owen published a scathing piece regaling stories of BP executives, including Lord Browne, spending millions of dollars in bribe money for years throwing drug and alcohol fueled sex parties for Azerbaijan government officials and businessmen in hopes of securing the rights to the gas field in the Caspian Sea.

As Owen reports, Les Abrahams, who led BP's successful bid for a multi-million-pound deal with one of the former Soviet republics, today claims that Browne - who was forced to resign as chief executive - presided over an "anything goes" regime of sexual license, spying and financial sweeteners.”

Mr Abrahams worked for BP's XFI unit - Exploring Frontiers International - which specializes in opening new markets in often unstable parts of the world.

"The order came from Browne's aides to 'get them anything they want'.

"By 'them', they meant local officials in Azerbaijan," Mr Abrahams said.

He described a Wild West world in which oil executives with briefcases full of dollars rubbed shoulders with mafia members, prostitutes and fixers and cut their deals in smoke-filled back rooms.”

Mr. Abrahams goes on to cite specific examples of backroom deals cut between BP and Azerbaijan officials. The full story can be found here: http://www.informationliberation.com/?id=21945

Cut to October of 2010 when Emil Guliyev (AFP) writes “British oil group BP signed a deal with Azerbaijan on Thursday to explore and develop a big Caspian Sea gas field, cementing the oil giant's leading position in the energy-rich former Soviet republic.” “The dots are all there,” says Brent Coon of Brent Coon & Associates. “We just need to connect them.”

When we begin to look at the big picture and the repeated misbehavior, corruption and cover up from BP such as the Texas City plant explosion, the propane market price fixing in Oklahoma, the Alaskan pipeline leak, the groundwater contamination in Illinois, the benzene leak at the Texas City refinery and the recent Gulf Coast oil spill, the pattern becomes clear. As BP continues to put profits over all else and continues to act with reckless abandon, BCA will continue to stand up against these manifestations of corporate greed.
